This is any extremely attractive and rare ''Campaign'' style clock by this top maker.
The eight day duration, gut fusee, timepiece movement with shouldered plates and Anchor recoil escapement.
Having a 5'' diameter, bowed white enamel dial with minute track and Roman hour numerals also, the maker''s signature of ''Rich(ard) Ganthony No. 49 LOMBARD STREET LONDON'' and also numbered ''215'' - all above centre. The steel hands are of spade style and behind a bowed, bevelled glass set within a hinged, finely cast ''ribbed'' bezel which is unlocked with a secret button disguised as a flush screwhead to the rear of the side.
The fine, campaign style, well-figured rosewood case of rectangular proportions is inlaid with brass patterning around the front which also has a brass inlaid snake within marquetry wings below the dial. There is a brass top moulding and a short, stepped plinth that is also inlaid with brass patterning. The sides are strung with brass and have corner dots. The c
...ase is stood upon four brass, acorn feet.
Richard Pinfold Ganthony needs no introduction as he was and is considered to be a top maker of his time. His numbering seems to have no records but the style of this clock puts it at around 1820. He was active from 1813 - 1845 and was apprenticed to his father (also Richard). He was freed in 1820 and became Master of the Clockmaker''s Company in 1845. This is a fine example of his work and very small.
The movement is in good working order but awaiting an overhaul. The case is restored and awaiting refitting of the original rear lock. The dial is awaiting restoration as there are some hairline cracks and chips to the centre hole.
The price is for the clock in its present condition. Once the aforementioned work has been carried out, the price when fully restored will be £5950.
The purchased item can be collected at a time mutually agreed or if required, delivery can be arranged for which we are happy to provide a quotation.
