Small Victorian Silver Turquoise Fleur De Lis Brooch

19th century
Description

A lovely little solid silver 19th century Victorian brooch set with vivid bright light blue natural turquoise cabochons. A very versatile accessory, perfect to adorn a blouse or to be worn as a lapel pin or tie decoration. Even "something blue" for a wedding!

The fleur de lis (also fleur de lys) is a stylised lotus or lily flower which represents light and life and has traditionally been associated with royalty, particularly in France.

Turquoise, in the language of Victorian sentimental jewellery, represents the forget-me-not flower symbolising true love and loyalty. The brooch may have been a romantic symbol used as a constant and powerful reminder of a love lost or perhaps of a sweetheart sent off to fight in the Crimean war. Pavé-set turquoise became fashionable for some time after the 12 bridesmaids at the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840 were presented with turquoise eagle brooches designed by the bridegroom.

The brooch is not hallmarked but tests as sterling silver.

The pin secures with a simple C clasp.

The piece is in very good antique condition; one of the turquoises has been replaced with a turquoise glass cabochon. Turquoise often changes its colour over time from blue to a more greenish hue as it comes into contact with water, oils and skin, but these turquoise cabochons have retained a lovely light bright blue colour.

Size: 2.5 x 1.8cm.

Weight: 2.5g.
