Webberley Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The company began in the late 18th Century at 87 George Street and is known for very high quality silver and inlaid boxes. It was bought in 1891 by Alexander James Brook who had worked at Marshalls since 1853 along with his son who had also worked at Marshalls since 1873 and who changed the company name to Brook & Son, continuing in the same fine quality traditions until 1941.
The box is beautifully made and the lovely grain and colour of the olivewood has mellowed to warm rich tones with a lovely original finish, inside the box is lined with unwaxed olive wood with a most attractive pale cream and dark grain.
A beautiful and rare example in olive wood, and would make a very lovely gift.
