Possibly Unique Windsor Chair Snake Head Carvings

19th century
Description

A Very impressive and possibly unique Windsor chair it is in Ash, I am wondering if this chair has not been made by a typical Winsdsor chair maker as there isnt a single piece steam bent the top rail is a single piece of timber carved to shape as are the arms and mid back spindle support so made by a master craftsman furniture maker, it has four carvings of I believe snakes heads which are very detailed , the condition is excellent just a slight opening up of the joint in the seat, it has a good colour and Patina. I have never seen another one quite like it.

circa 1830

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Windsor chair is defined by a solid timber construction where the back spindles and turned legs are socketed directly into a thick, contoured seat. Originating in Great Britain during the early 18th century, the design was produced by regional craftspeople using local hardwoods.

Windsor chairs frequently combine multiple wood species, employing elm for the carved saddle seat due to its split-resistant grain, alongside ash, yew, beech, or oak for bent components, spindles, and turned legs.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-hewn tooling marks, wedge-fastened tenons visible through the seat timber, micro-shrinkage around socket joints, and uneven patination from historical wear.

An ornamental Windsor chair functions as an accent piece in minimalist or contemporary settings, positioned in an entryway, study corner, or alongside modern upholstery to create visual texture.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to minimize movement, dust with a soft microfiber cloth, and apply a thin coat of natural beeswax annually to protect the surface finish.
