A most unusual Imari vase moulded with twin dragons clasping a pearl. Most Imari wares are more simply decorated on a smooth body, this piece has a ribbed body, and opposing twin dragons moulded In very high relief in the Chinese manner.

Imari porcelain originates from Arita, Japan, named after the export port of Imari. It typically features underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gold decorative enamels, often portraying traditional foliage or mythological motifs.

Crafted from kaolin clay, these pieces were fired at high temperatures after applying underglaze cobalt blue. Subsequent firings set the overglaze enamel colours, including iron red and green, alongside raised or moulded relief details.

Authentic pieces generally display slightly uneven hand-painted detailing, subtle footrim discolouration from kiln firing, and specific palette tones of dark underglaze blue and brick-red enamel rather than modern synthetic pigments.

Position Imari porcelain on a neutral mantelpiece, console table, or within an open shelving display to allow the bold cobalt blue and iron red palette to contrast against understated backgrounds.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid immersion in water or using harsh chemical solvents, as moisture can compromise delicate overglaze enamels or gilt features.
