Beautiful Antique (edo Period) Japanese Five-case Lacquer Inro Depicting Japanese Horsetail

Lovely Japanese late Edo period five-case lacquer inro depicting Japanese horsetail (barred horsetail/equisetum japonicum), the exterior worked in gold maki-e on a black ground. The interior is decorated in nashiji. Unsigned. Comes with a jade/glass ojime.

Horsetail is a plant used to make medicine that’s employed for ‘fluid retention’ (edema), kidney and bladder stones, urinary tract infections, the inability to control urination (incontinence), and general disturbances of the kidney and bladder.
