Description

Pair of early C19th Dutch ‘japanned’ pewter chestnut urns of neo-classical design .

Of good large scale , the ovoid tapering bodies with scarlet red ground and gilt decoration depicting country landscape scenes, the removable covers with acorn style finials . The sides fitted with well-modelled decorative lions-mask ring handles.

In excellent original condition with only minor loss of decoration and historic minor dents and mis-shaping to the covers commensurate with age , use and purpose.

*urns of this type were used to carry hot chestnuts from the fireplace to the table , their fashionable neoclassical design adding to the decorative scheme of the dining room when not in use .

FAQs

Japanned chestnut urns are decorative containers created in Europe during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, inspired by East Asian lacquerware. Originally designed to store or warm chestnuts near the hearth, their forms adopt Classical Greek and Roman urn proportions.

These vessels were formed from pewter metal and coated in multiple layers of dark varnish or lacquer to imitate Asian lacquerwork. Hand-painted motifs, such as rural landscapes and leaf borders, were painted onto the surface before heat-curing to harden the decorative finish.

Authentic pieces show natural signs of age, including fine surface craquelure, mild oxidisation on unlacquered metal, and minor edge wear. Traditional construction markers include weighted bases, hand-turned finials, and freehand paintwork with minor irregularities.

Positioning a pair of urns symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece creates visual balance and introduces dark, historical tones to modern rooms. They function effectively as architectural accents alongside modern artwork or structured botanical displays.
