17th Century English Lantern Clock By Benjamin Brockhurst Of Coventry circa 1690

This antique has been viewed 75 times in the past month with the most views from Finland.

This is an extremely original Midlands made Chamber clock in full working condition.
The thirty hour duration two train, chain driven movement with a very small crown wheel, verge escape, centre-swinging internal 'between the trains' pendulum with 'Anchor' bob. Also having countwheel striking the hours to the substantially loud bell. The anchor flukes pleasingly protrude through the side doors as the pendulum swings
The dial plate has symmetrical floral fronded engraving and the upper area to the centre bears the maker's name "Ben (jamin) Brockhurst, Coventry. The bold chapter ring has tall Roman hour numerals, 1/2 hour Fleur-de-Lys markings and an inner divided 1/4 ring. The single tailed steel hand is blackened. All three floral frets are engraved and the bell is fixed to an iron spider that is sprung within the corner finials. Both side doors have a high arched pendulum aperture and the iron backplate carries the wall 'stand off' spikes.
Benjamin Brockhurst was married in 1682 to Hannah Winterton. He worked in Smithford Street. In 1688 he was appointed Warder of Coventry, he became a Councillor and was elected Mayor in 1708. He died in 1733.
This is one of the most original chamber clocks that I have seen. With the exception of being converted from rope to chain driven, having a replaced crown wheel arbor, top finial and pendulum bob (to improve appearance) it appears to be totally original including the doors, weight, bell and strap and all of the square-headed screws. It is working beautifully and rarely can a clock of this age be found to not only have been historically well maintained but also so original. It is in full working condition, though would benefit with a clean and light overhaul.
The price is for the clock in present condition. Any work required can be discussed upon enquiry.
The purchased clock can be collected at a time mutually agreed. Alternatively, delivery can be arranged for which a quotation can be supplied.
