Description

18th C. Bronze Allegoric Fireplace Centre Frieze from an Adam's Style Fireplace.

This is a very interesting and rare bronze frieze belonging to an Robert Adam's style fireplace from

c.1770's.

The frieze depicting the five renaissance man virtues i.e. rhetoric & philosophy - music & poetry -

architecture& theology and exploration.

The frieze belonged to an Robert Adam's style fireplace and was situated in the middle of the

fireplace, the fireplace was dismantled and destroyed many years ago, neither the less a very

beautiful and rare piece of history.

Very faint foundry mark numbers can be found to the right side of the frieze under the oak leave of

the fire urn of the rhetoric & philosophy virtue we think the numbers are 5488580 (or 8) and maybe

in one of the lozenges the letters S and G again very hard to read due to the casting process.

The frieze is in a oblong within a stepped bronze frame, on the the reverse there four small round

holes in which the bronze pins were inserted to mount the frieze to the fireplace, later hooks and

later solder repairs can be found.

The frieze is in wonderful condition and has a beautiful patina.

Measurements: approx. 23.75 Inches or W. 60cm x 4 Inches or H.10cm 0.5 Inch or 8mm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Adam style fireplace frieze is a decorative horizontal panel placed in the centre of a fireplace surround, characteristic of late 18th-century Neoclassical design popularized by architect Robert Adam. These friezes often feature low-relief castings of classical allegories, mythological scenes, urns, festoons, or cherubs.

During the 18th century, decorative fireplace friezes were primarily crafted from cast bronze, brass, statuary marble, or carved timber. Cast metal pieces were often hand-chased after casting to sharpen details before receiving a dark patinated or gilded surface finish.

Authentic 18th-century bronze castings display evidence of hand-finishing, subtle surface irregularities from period foundry techniques, and natural oxidisation or wear within deep relief recesses. The reverse side often exhibits hand-tooling or sand-casting marks typical of historical production methods.

A bronze relief frieze can be mounted directly onto a wall as an architectural accent piece, framed as artwork, displayed above a fireplace mantelpiece, or set on a picture rail easel. Its dark metal tone offers structural contrast against modern light-coloured walls.

Care should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft brush or lint-free cloth. Abrasive chemical polishes and harsh detergents should be avoided to prevent stripping the historic patina; a thin layer of microcrystalline wax may be applied sparingly to protect the metal.
