A smart and very elegant late Victorian Tantalus in exotic Coromandel wood. The fittings are silver plated and the bottles, cut glass.
The silver bar to the top is signed by the well renowned manufacturer "Betjemman's" and is marked "Betjemann's Patent, London" and the other side engraved "The Tantalus"; Betjemman was the finest maker of Tantalus.
To add to the pedigree of this example, the Coromandel case is mounted by the famous London retailer, "Mappin & Webb Ltd. 2 Queen Victoria St. EC".
The lock comes with a key and once unlocked, the barrel can be pressed down to release the bar enabling the decanters to be removed. Each of the bottles is beautifully hand cut.
A special example in excellent condition measuring 14 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 11 3/4" tall to top of handle. Each decanter measures 3 1/4" square x 8 1/4" tall.
