Description

The first thing to look for in this unique bread sofreh, is the main border, woven in soumak technique and depicting interesting birds - double-headed ones, cockerels and 'normal' birds!

It is rare to find a border like this on an Afshar bread sofreh, which surrounds the stunning plain-weave field. Woven circa the 1920s, all the colours are natural and the weaving is in excellent, complete condition. Bread sofrehs were used for kneading the dough to make the bread and were usually caked in flour until washed, when out glows the stunning designs and beautiful natural colours. This is a magnificent example.
