Rare Queen Anne 1700 Pique Work Silver Malacca Care

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Shires Antiques

Extremely rare Queen Anne Malacca wood and silver walking stick or cane.
The silver isn't hallmarked, common for this age but has been tested as English standard solid silver. However the sides of the cane has the initials IB to one side and 1700, the date to the other. This is example has been referenced to Page 14 of Jeffrey Snyders book Canes and Walking Sticks where he shows an almost identical (bar the pattern design) cane which is dated 1691.
The pommel above the silver collar is decorated with pique decoration, circles of silver punched into the body of the pommel to form the pattern. This is replicated on the top of the pommel.
A sturdy Malacca shaft which has it's original finish. This has worn in areas but has never been touched or restored. Retains it's original extended brass ferrule which kept the base of the cane out of the street debris.
It measures 92.7 cm 36 1/2 inches in length, the pommel is 4.2 cm 1 5/8 inches wide and 6.3 cm 2 1/2 inches long.
It's in excellent condition but with some signs of age and use as you'd expect at this age. Some very minor loss to the tiny silver rings in the pique decoration, please study the pictures carefully. Also some staining to the natural pommel althong the grain lines but overall outstanding for a cane thatís over 300 years old. No damage or repairs bar the small amount of loss in the decoration.
Please see the book reference above. Canes this age don't come onto the market often although we've been lucky to find some over the last few months, see our sales history.
