Unusual Scottish Cut Glass and Silver Plated Lidded Serving Dish C.1920

Description

A really unusual lidded serving box, this design usually coming in the form of preserve jars, biscuit boxes etc.; mostly by John Grinsell or Hukin and Heath.

This large example I have never seen before and with the aperture in the lid to accommodate a serving spoon, I can only guess that this was made from storing and serving something like Fruit.

The multi-faceted sides is then engraved with a simple linear design and the underside with a star-cut design. This one is signed on the silver plated collar by the Scottish silversmith, goldsmith and Jewellery, "Edward, Glasgow" for Edward and Sons of 92 Buchanan Street Glasgow.

Dating to c.1910 / 1920 it remains in excellent condition measuring 8 3/4" in diameter x 4 1/4" tall.

During the 1910s and 1920s, manufacturers combined heavy cut glass with electroplated nickel silver covers to produce affordable dining accessories. Scottish glassworks and Sheffield platers produced covered butter dishes, preserve pots, and serving bowls that featured clean, geometric cuts reflecting the transition into Art Deco aesthetics.

These vessels were manufactured using blown lead glass or soda-lime glass that was wheel-cut with decorative patterns. The covers and rims were constructed from base metals such as nickel silver or copper, electroplated with a thin layer of pure silver.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut glass edges with slight variations in cutting depth, alongside appropriate wear on the base. The metal mounts often feature maker marks or electroplate stamps, such as EPNS, along the inner rim or underside of the lid.

A lidded glass dish functions well as a table centrepiece, a dressing table trinket container, or a sideboard accessory. Placing the piece near natural light accentuates the refractivity of the cut glass and the polished sheen of the silver lid.
