Description
-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques- A fine George III mahogany bachelors chest, with an interesting provenance. c1760. This very charming small chest has a hinged top which opens out and is supported by pull-out lopers to create a very useful writing surface. Over an arrangement of five graduating drawers with lip-moulded edges. The drawers have solid mahogany fronts, are elm lined and of dove-tail construction. Retaining the original swan-neck handles. Good rich colour with the original finish. Standing on bracket feet. To the underside of the chest is a label which names the original owner of the chest. The label reads- For Robert Ladbroke Esq At Idlicote Warwick 31 May. The text is written in the Roundhand style of writing which is stylistically correct for the date of the chest. The label is pinned on with several handmade nails which also indicates and authenticates the age of the label, and just the general colour and patination of the paper which would happen naturally over time. There is also a signature before the date which is hard to decipher. Robert Ladbroke was a member of a Warwickshire family and was an English politician who sat in the house of commons from 1754 to 1770. He lived in Idlicote House Warwickshire, which was purchased by the family in 1759. In excellent antique condition, general expected minor signs of age and use. All drawers are very robust and open smoothly and evenly. Very solid sturdy and strong.
