Victorian Japanese Parquetry & Tortoiseshell Bamboo Table

An unusual late Victorian bamboo occasional table with a Japanese parquetry top and bamboo supports with simulated tortoiseshell colouring. The cane edged square top inlaid with a geometric design in various specimen woods and similarly inlaid lower shelf, with an additional undertier to the top with original embossed ‘leather’ paper providing a useful place for magazines and papers.
 
This beautiful Anglo-Japanese Oriental inspired table is in very good condition, there is some fading and discolouration to the mottling in the bamboo and an old repaired split to the lowest shelf neither of which detract from this rare piece of Art Furniture.
 
Bamboo and simulated bamboo furniture has been popular in earlier time periods it was during the Aesthetic period in the late 19th century that large quantities of exotic oriental inspired bamboo furniture began to be produced in Britain.
