Description

Very rare, superb quality, late 18th Century Grand Tour white statuary marble oval relief portrait plaque of Augustus Caesar. Mounted in its original ebonised wooden frame with faint gold painted remnants of the name 'AVGVTVS' to the base. Reverse of the marble also inscribed, 'AVGVTVS' with the number 2 indicating it was probably once part of a pair or a series. Rome, circa 1780.
