Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.
It is also gold embossed in the interior of the lid Briggs, Makers, 27 Piccadilly, London). The interior of the lid is opened to reveal a compartment for letters and papers.

The lock was made by the top quality Sampson Mordan, London.
The interior is fully fitted with both a Berry's Patent travel inkwell and Light (vesta), a leather desk blotter and various writing instruments.

The box comes with a working key and associated dust cover which has done it's job preserving this fine box.
