Antique English Georgian Blue & White Transfer "Indian Temple" Pattern Pottery Ewer & Basin

A fine and rare Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Pottery Ewer and Toilet Basin of Indian interest, by Elkin, Knight and Bridgwood of Foley Pottery, Fenton, Staffordshire { Circa 1827 - 1840 }. Printed in a medium blue palette with the "Indian Temple" pattern, this example is unmarked, but a marked example of the basin, noted as held by the Castle Museum, Norwich, is recorded in Volume I of Coysh & Henrywood's "Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780 - 1880", a marked and titled ewer in the same pattern being illustrated in Volume II. This pattern appears to derive from more than one source print. The right hand side would appear clearly to relate to "Remains of an Ancient Building near Firoz Shah's Cotilla, Delhi", taken from Thomas and William Daniell's "Oriental Scenery", and used as the basis for the "Monopteros" pattern, { Sack, Plates 2-14 and 2-15 }.The left hand side seems more likely to have been inspired by the engraving by George Cooke, based on William Hodges' "Part of the City of Benares", from John Pinkerton's "A General Collection of the Best and Most Interesting Voyages and Travels in All Parts of the World", { Sack, Plate 8-2 }
