A French margin mirror features secondary peripheral glass sections set around a central main mirror plate. This design allowed makers in the 17th and 18th centuries to expand the overall dimensions of reflective wall pieces before single large glass plates could be reliably manufactured.

These pieces are constructed from carved timber frames coated in gesso plaster, which are then finished with gold leaf gilding alongside painted or un-gilded areas. The reflective plates originally utilised glass backed with tin-mercury amalgam.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved backing boards held in place with old nails, red or grey clay bole visible beneath worn gilding, and silvering oxidisation spots on the mirror plate.
