Antique Sicilian Fork Art Wrought Iron & Painted Cart Axle

1900 - 1920
Description

A highly decorative Sicilian cart axle, circa 1920, by Rizza Francesco of Modica, with ornate wrought ironwork and retaining original rustic painted finish. Now modified as a large table candelabra, could also be hung on chains.

These traditional hand made decorative carts were introduced to Sicily by the ancient Greeks and are painted with scenes from classical mythology and local folklore. They are used for festive occasions such as weddings and festival parades.
