Description

Beautiful late 18th.c. Welsh oak high back box settle c.1790. A superb example, of gently curving form in sold oak throughout. Tall sloping backrest with a shallow canopy over six flat panels and a simple moulded detail to the surrounding rails and mullions. Open arms with a slight curve and rounded terminals on tapering front stiles. Curved seat (depth 14?) with a hinged board at the centre lifting to reveal useful storage below for boots and shoes etc. Panelled front below the seat to match the backrest and continued at the sides. Note how the rear of the base is flared for extra stability. Presented as found, excellent condition with particularly good colour and patina.
