Edwardian Ebony and Carved Horn Tiger Walking Stick Cane C1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An unusual walking stick cane made of polished ebony surmounted by a combined pommel and figurative carving of a tiger, both carved from the same piece of horn. The collar is either silver plated or unmarked silver as it has been stamped with maker’s initials WM. The cane also has a horn tip. The exceptional feature is the pommel with tiger atop - the carving of the tiger is extraordinary with each leg and the tail separate. The tiger raises one paw but the other three legs and paws, and the tail, are fixed to and part of the horn pommel. (They are not glued or nailed together). The body is etched with a few stripes and the face is so detailed, the eyes and teeth are white. All in all, exceptional. It is probably a colonial piece from India or thereabouts.
