Masons Patent Ironstone China was patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England. Designed as a durable, hard-wearing alternative to imported porcelain, ironstone tableware frequently featured Chinoiserie and Imari-inspired floral patterns and became widely popular throughout the Victorian era.

Ironstone is a dense, vitrified earthenware made using clay combined with ground slag and flint. Decorative tureens were created using a combination of transfer printing for outlines, hand-painted polychrome enamel embellishments, and overglaze gilded detailing.
