Masons Patent Ironstone was patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England, as a durable earthenware alternative to imported Chinese porcelain.

These pieces were made from heavy vitreous ceramic known as ironstone, finished with hand-painted enamel glazes and gilding over transfer-printed patterns.

Authentic pieces feature printed or impressed makers marks on the underside, substantial physical weight, and characteristic cobalt blue, madder red, and gilt decoration over transfer prints.
