19th C. Russian Bronze & Enamel Folding Triptych or travel icon.

This is a nice bronze & enamel folding triptych/travel icon depicting scenes of the life of Christ from

the first quarter of the 19th century.

When folded the front of the triptych is decorated with a seal depicting the holy cross on mount Golgotha and Jerusalem

on the background, at the top of the triptych are two lugs to attach a cord or ribbon for wearing.

The measurements are: (when folded) approx. 5.5cm x 5.5cm - (unfolded) approx. 15.5cm x 5.5cm

Travel icons, or road icons, were created in Russia to allow Orthodox Christians to carry religious imagery securely during journeys. These folding bronze triptychs and diptychs gained widespread popularity from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries due to their durability and portability compared to wooden icons.

These icons were cast using copper alloys, primarily bronze or brass, using sand-casting techniques. Many examples were enhanced with champleve enamel fills in shades of blue, white, and green, and were occasionally finished with silver or gold plating.
