Description

The most charming aspect of this rug is the depiction of the man and wife in the top left hand corner of the indigo-blue field. Utterly charming!

Could this have been a marriage rug? Above the young couple is old Armenian script which, when translated, may help to identify the real reason for the making of this rug.

Recently out of a private collection where it has been for many years, I've had the rug washed and restored where necessary, but the pile is evenly low as can be seen in the photos. Nevertheless, the rug, which must date to circa 1880, has another 100 years of use on the floor but I suspect it would take on its own charm, hanging on the wall. It's a great example of early Armenian knotted weaving.
