Victorian High Back Mahogany & Upholstered Double Bed

19th century
Description

A handsome Victorian mahogany and upholstered double bed dating to circa 1880. With a tall half tester size arched padded and upholstered headboard and two acanthus carved and fluted columns flanking the moulded panelled upholstered footboard, it stands on turned feet raised on later castors for ease of moving.

In very good condition and of super quality, the show wood to the head and foot board has been repolished using traditional methods, and both the head and foot boards have been repadded, recovered and trimmed with a rope-twist cord ready for finishing with a final layer of fabric. The side rails are not polished as these would usually not be seen and they have had slats fixed to create a support for the mattress base. There are marks as should be expected commensurate with age and use, an old repair to a finial and a dented area on the top inner edge of the footboard none of which detracts from the overall look.

The price shown is for the bedframe only, we have displayed it with a low spring base and standard double sized mattress. The bedside cabinets are available separately to buy separately and we always have chests and wardrobes available which would compliment this bed.

The sizes at the largest points are approximately:

Width - 54 1/4in (138cm)

Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

For delivery we use a small carrier experience in carrying antique furniture. Delivery is usually within 31 days and the carrier will make arrangements with you directly. We can provide contact details of other carriers if required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian mahogany beds from the mid to late 19th century typically feature grand proportions, high arched or rounded headboards, hand-carved side posts, and rich flame mahogany veneers.

19th-century bed frames were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often accented with flame mahogany veneers, fabric upholstery, and cast iron or brass castors.

Authentic Victorian bedsteads display hand-cut joinery, original timber or iron side rails, genuine brass castors, and natural hand-applied French polish over dense mahogany wood.

Balance the visual weight and rich timber tones of a Victorian mahogany bed by pairing it with crisp neutral bed linen, muted wall shades, and modern bedside lighting.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, while avoiding direct heat and sunlight.
