Scottish Landscape Oil Painting By William Smeall (1790-1883)

A wonderful Scottish oil on artists board landscape scene by William Smeall (1790-1883). The painting is titled on the reverse ''In West Glenalmond'' and shows a scene of sheep drovers moving their livestock through a narrow pass with waterfall. The painting is quite dark to contrast with the sun streaming in over the top of the ridge and highlighting the waterfall, typical of romantic landscape painting. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in good condition, it does have a craquelure typical of older works. The painting appears not to be signed on the front although it could be lost in the dark undergrowth, it is signed and dated on the reverse 1864. It is also numbered on the reverse which means it was an exhibited work or from a large collection. William Smeall is recorded as dating from 1790 to 1883, he obviously lived and worked in Scotland as all of his works are of Scottish subjects particularly Edinburgh where he possibly lived.
