The platforms of these gilded carved limewood and gilt wall brackets are supported by winged cherubs.

The decoratively edged platforms are a good size, suitable for displaying substantial items and have a strong metal hanging facility. The brackets are in good original condition.

Wall brackets featuring putti or cherubs gained widespread popularity during the Italian Baroque and Rococo periods of the 17th and 18th centuries, continuing through 19th-century revivals. They were designed as decorative architectural projections to support porcelain, clocks, or sculpture.

These pieces were typically carved from softwoods such as linden or pine, coated with layers of chalky gesso preparation, and then gilded using water gilding techniques with genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carving marks on the reverse, natural oxidisation of the underlying wood, subtle cracking in the gesso layer (craquelure), and areas where the red or grey bole undercoat shows through worn gilding.
