A 19th Century North Italian Renaissance revival ebonised and inlaid Savonarola chair in the manner of Ferdinando Pogliani, the shaped back inlaid with a central fleur de lys, grotesques and scrolling foliage, the X shaped frame with inlaid decoration throughout including the reverse of the back panel and seat with the Medici family arms.
The X framed folding chair dates back to antiquity and was originally a symbol of magisterial power. The name Savonarola comes from the religious zealot Girolamo Savonarola who led Florence during the Renaissance. He owned a chair of this style which became popular during the 19th century.
Ferdinando Pogliani (1832 - 1899) was a leading cabinet-maker based in Milan, active from 1854. He is particularly well known for his Renaissance revival inlaid ebonised furniture.
Please see my listing of another very similar ebonised Savonarola chair which would make a near-matching pair.
