1920s Kays Standard Lever Pocket Watch & Chain

1920s Kays Standard Lever pocket watch & chain.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement, identified as being by Revue, which is working well. The watch would have been bought in as a private label piece to be sold under the retailer’s name, Kay & Co Ltd, and the movement is signed with their name.

William Kay set up Kays of Worcester in 1890. Customers bought items from handbills in a folder and initially the goods on offer were limited to jewellery, watches, clocks and household items. Eventually William’s son Jack took over the running of the business. The company continued to expand and trade successfully, becoming one of Worcester’s largest employers.

This particular movement is protected by an inner dust cover which has some scratching where a tool has probably slipped in the past.

The watch measures 51mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the loop. The case is nickel and has light surface marking from use and a couple of small "dings" to the back but overall it is in nice condition. The inner case back has light surface scratches

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed and Kays have given the watch the name “Standard Lever”. There are some short hairlines between numbers 4 and 5 but they are quite faint. Original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes on a vintage nickel albert chain which measures 29cm long including the T bar and clasp.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.
