Hawksworth, Eyre & Co

was founded in 1833 by Charles Hawksworth and John Eyre as successors of Blagden, Hodgson & Co. The first mark was registred in 1862. They were manufacturers and silversmiths of silver and silver plated objects.

In the 19th Century they opened branches in London, Buenos Aires, Montreal and New York, an amazing accomplishment at that time.

The partnership was dissolved in 1869 and the business was continued by James Kebberling Bembridge, Thomas Hall and George Woofhouse. In the 1870s the firm was converted into a limited liability company under the style Hawksworth, Eyre & Co Ltd. Further marks were registered in 1900 & 1912. The firm went into liquidation in the 1930s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, silver-plated wine coolers became prominent table centerpieces in formal dining, allowing hosts to keep wine chilled at the table while displaying elaborate metalwork.

These vessels were typically constructed from a base metal such as nickel silver or copper, which was electroplated with a layer of pure silver and detailed with chased or cast ornamentation.

Authentic pieces feature manufacturer makers marks or electroplate stamps on the rim or underside, heavy visual weight, and fine relief detailing such as cast handles and botanical motifs.

Silver wine coolers can be styled on a dining sideboard, bar cart, or drinks cabinet, serving either as functional beverage chillers or decorative vessels for floral arrangements.

Clean silver plate gently with a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to prevent wearing down the electroplated layer, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and moisture build-up.
