Antique Italian Milanese Ebonised & Inlaid Savonarola Chair

19th century
Description

A 19th Century North Italian Renaissance revival ebonised and inlaid Savonarola chair in the manner of Ferdinando Pogliani, the shaped back inlaid with the arms of the Medici family and scrolling foliage, the X shaped frame with inlaid decoration throughout including the reverse of the back panel.

The X framed folding chair dates back to antiquity and was originally a symbol of magisterial power. The name Savonarola comes from the religious zealot Girolamo Savonarola who led Florence during the Renaissance. He owned a chair of this style which became popular during the 19th century.

Ferdinando Pogliani (1832 - 1899) was a leading cabinet-maker based in Milan, active from 1854. He is particularly well known for his Renaissance revival inlaid ebonised furniture.

Please see my listing of another very similar ebonised Savonarola chair.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
