This is a very rare 19thc. Wedgwood, creamware dinner plate, decorated with hand-painted frogs marvelling at a Peacock butterfly. By Leonce Goutard & Pierre Mallet c. 1870, this piece was made for The Royal Danish Galleries, A. Borgen and Co. Impressed 'WEDGWOOD', and a date code for 1872, it also has, in hand painted script, 'Borgen & Co. Service Leonce & Mallet'. This plate is a highly collectable item. It is in excellent antique condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. Specks of kiln dust are visible under magnification. Please note that there are some light intrusions and reflections in the photographs.

Diameter of plate: 25cm (10 inches)

In the early 1870s, The Royal Danish Galleries were established under the patronage of Alexandra, the Princess of Wales, within Borgen & Co., 142, New Bond Street, London.. Initially showcasing the arts of Denmark, a new showroom of French and Belgian works of art, was created, for which the French artists, Pierre Mallet and Léonce Goutard, were exclusively employed to decorate porcelain plaques and vases and Wedgwood creamware blanks, with their own distinctive, hand-painted designs. A letter dated October 26th, 1874, from Balmoral Castle to Messrs. Borgen & Co. requests a dinner service in addition to the botanical one already ordered on behalf of Queen Victoria. The letter requests that both services be ready for Christmas, suggesting that they may have been intended as gifts. Two soup bowls from the Royal Danish Galleries are to be found in the British Museum.
