When I went in search of bread sofrehs in the 1990s and 2000s, they were generally caked in flour to the point that the designs were undiscernible. However, once washed, out poured the vibrant natural colours that you see here with designs, usually symbolic, inspired by the weaver's own woven art. I can see in this sofreh, the large eye in the centre, symbolically warding of evil spirits and surrounded by the zig-zags of flowing water.
Such antique bread sofrehs are now scarce in Iran and make fabulous wall art here in the West.
