Antique Bread Sofreh, Afshar Nomads, Kerman Province, South Persia.

Description

The bread sofreh, woven in plain-weave technique, was used specifically for kneading the dough to make 'lavash' - bread. When I went in search of these bread sofrehs in the 1990s and 2000s, they were generally caked in flour and their designs undiscernible. However, once washed, out came some amazing nomadic woven art such as this one with its abrash of natural red colour and a pattern of zig-zags in the centre. The nomad herself, could create her own art and in this case, I believe the zig-zags represented flowing water - with bread, salt and water the necessities in tribal life.

Bread sofrehs like this one, woven in the early 20th century, are now becoming scarce.
