Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.
It is of a hazel-brown color, with black stripes (or the other way about), very heavy and hard. It is also known as Macassar Ebony or variegated ebony and is closely related to genuine ebony, but is obtained from different species in the same genus.

This exotic wood with it's lustrous surface, durability and grain pattern make it a popular choice in modern design and a true fashion statement in the 21st century.
The box dates to around 1840, and was a fine top-notch example in it's day with solid brass edging, brass stringing and a inlaid cartouche to the top which has a couple of decorative initials engraved, I think J C. The handles to either side are superb with inlaid decorative plates. There is a Bramah lock with working key, the best locks to be found.

The button to the back of the top compartment releases the bottom drawer which retains it's original fitted interior for jewellery. The main compartment has been recently re-lined in a complimentary hand marbled paper providing a fresh clean interior ready for use.
A classic and elegant box in an impressive size measuring 13" x 10" x 7" tall.
