A very handsome Art Deco, silver Cigarette Box. This elegant box is decorated with a neat, all-over, engine turned pattern, creating an almost matt finish. It stands on four stepped feet and has a neat protruding lip on the hinged lid to enable opening. When opened the highly polished silver to the underside of the lid produces a mirror effect. The wooden interior has three separate adjustable compartments to place cigarettes of varying sizes. Clear hallmarks are visible to one side of the box with partial marks under the lid, for Birmingham 1947, along with the Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling and the maker''s mark for the renowned silversmith: Mappin & Webb. The underneath of the box is stamped ''Mappin & Webb'' and also engraved is the retailer''s name: Harris''s St Annes-on-sea. Although originally for cigarettes, this box could be used for trinkets as a jewellery box.
