Early C19th Regency period black lacquered papier-mâché rectangular tray with gilded Chinoiserie decoration.
Striking black and gilt papier-mâché tray of good large scale decorated with fantastical Chinoiserie decoration featuring Phoenix or Ho-ho birds , moths , butterflies , ivy-leaf and blossom .
In excellent original with only minor historic chips to edges. The gilding in excellent condition with a bright hue and minimal loss or rubbing. The surface with minor aged crackulature or crazing , commensurate with age and use.
Unsigned or stamped to reverse, but of high-quality manufacture and skilfully decorated , probably by Clay or Jennens & Bettridge the leading producers of this type and style of papier-mâché ware during this period.
