A Rare ‘Selenus’ 'Rocking Horse' Chess Set, Germany or Central Europe, circa 1830

in polished bone, one side stained black or a very dark brown, kings with pierced double galleries, queens with pierced single galleries, bishops with cogged finials, knights with unusual horse finials, rooks as slender turrets, pawns with baluster knops, with a mahogany and boxwood board/box, with a sliding drawer and turned bone handle to the front (2)

King: 11.5cm high

Pawn: 4.8cm high

Board/Box: 32cm wide, 8cm high
