Description

Superb painted metal figure of Joan of Arc by the French sculptor Antonin Mercié (1845-1916) c.1890. Standing 26" high, beautifully modelled wearing a finely observed medieval suit of armour, note the chainmail, pointed toes and spurs. Instead of her helmet which lies with a sword by her feet she wears a crown of thorns, eyes closed and hands clasped in prayer. Retaining the original painted finish to the face and hands plus some elements of the armour and the base. Clearly signed by Mercié in the cast on the side of the base. Raised on a veined marble plinth. The sword is a little bent toward the tip, otherwise excellent condition.
