By unscrewing the cast finial, the lid can be removed to add the peppercorns and there is a movement at the base to grind the pepper. The grinding mechanism is activated by rotating the lid. The base has a very unusual and rather ingenious sliding bracket opening and closing the pepper supply. The lid has a square opening sitting flush on the steel rod with the finial neatly screwed in place.

Head of Minerva.
Maker's marks in lozenge, A B with a cross and two stars for Albert Beaufort of 198 Rue St Martin, Paris.
