Antique Furniture Direct has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
To the sides there are two beautifully spiral turned handles. Footmen were used to stand plates or dishes on near the fire to warm them, or to stand kettles on etc. These look great in Inglenook fireplaces or as coffee tables.
