Bryden & Sons Edinburgh, a Shop's Bell

19th century
Description

A brass shop's bell in good working order with the name of Bryden & Sons, 80 Rose Street on the wall fitting with other markings that could either be a registered number, or part of the word Edinburgh.

The company was set up by John Bryden (1757-1829) who was a bell hanger from Peeblesshire, and his two grandsons took over the business one under the name of Bryden & Sons in Edinburgh in and Glasgow in 1846, and the other in another part of Edinburgh. More information about the family and their role in bell making can be found online.

This bell is approximately 28cm in length from the top of the metal fitting, and the bell is 11cm in diameter at the base. It still has the original clapper. The outer side of the fitting has a floral design for customers to see, and is in good condition.

There is a tiny hole at the very top of the bell - see photo 2 - but it doesn't affect the sound and it could possibly have been a flaw during casting as there are no signs of weakness in the other parts of the bell.

Postage and packing for delivery in the UK mainland is included in the price and for remote areas or abroad, please contact us for a delivery quote.
