Rare and Exquisite Victorian Silver Sugar Basket by Nathan & Hayes, Chester 1896

Description

This gorgeous pierced silver sugar basket is dated Chester 1896 and nears the marks of the renowned Nathan & Hayes. The navette-shaped body exquisitely pierced with lattice and foliate scrolls surrounding two cartouches, one side vacant, the other engraved with a griffin.

Reeded border and swing handle. The handle hallmarked with Lion passant.

It is fitted with the original and rather beautiful turquoise soda glass liner. A rare colour.

Good silver gauge, wonderful quality.

Hallmarks:

GN over RH for George Nathan & Ridley Hayes.

Lion Passant.

Chester Assay Mark.

Date letter "N" for 1896.

Dimensions:

Height with handle raised: 14cm / 5.4 inches.

Width: 10.5cm / 4 inches.

Depth: 8.5cm / 3 inches.

Weight excluding liner: 135 g / 4.7 oz.
