Youngs Antiques has dated this piece to the 18th Century.

Two slides decorated with mythical winged beasts slide out from the base, the front flap lowers down to reveal and integral bank of ornately carved gothic tracery drawers and two small cupboards decorated with carved fruit wood romayne panels all of which have blue painted back grounds. Above the drawers is a gothic cornice, which runs all the way round the top, with the front cornice lifting up to reveal a compartment for larger documents.

The iron work is as incredibly detailed as the carving, the central hasp in the form of a gothic arch clips into the round flamboyant gothic lock, which is still in working order with the original key.

Either side of the flap are two more gothic roundels with sliding locks in the form of snails both in working order.
To the sides of the desk top are two large ornate iron carrying handles which allow you to lift the top off of the base.

The base consists of multiple turned and carved columns with the sides displaying sugar twist supports. The centre of the stand shows a series of gothic arches with small gothic carved panels and a pair of romayne panels beneath a row of finely turn finials.

This Vargueno has had some wood worm and some old repairs commensurate with age, but it is in superb condition and has a fantastic patina.
