A Military Campaign Telescope
£1,250 $1,693 €1,473
A good mahogany CASED military campaign telescope by J H Steward of London. Circa 1880. Complete with all its components and having an extremely well magnified sharp clear image. It is of three draw construction by the renowned London maker whom specialized in optical instruments for military use. Silver or nickel plated with the makers name inscribed on the first draw. The inscribed addresses and case label help establish its age fairly accurately within a few years (in 1886 West Strand would have been added). The tripod stand unscrews to revel a corkscrew mechanism for attaching the scope to a suitable wooden support when in the field and there is an additional plate in the case for more permanent attachment to a wooden base. The original lens cap is present and the viewing eyepiece slide works correctly. The case has its original working key and flush brass carrying handle. From past field use there are minor indentations on the first draw, some oxidation and a discolouration spot ...on the outer edge of the object lens (which has not affect at all on the viewing ability see last photo). There are some water stains on the leather barrel covering which is otherwise in excellent condition. There is an additional lens for viewing the sun or bright objects (not recommended for use). Lovely smell of gun oil from the interior.
In all not only a good quality instrument but also superb to look at.
