Antique Chain Fusee Small Library Four Glass Clock by Purvis London

19th century
Description

Antique Chain Fusee Small Library Four Glass Clock Purvis London.

?

This stunning antique library clock has an ebonised wooden case. The top of the case has a thick bevelled glass surrounded by a moulding leading down to another moulding to the top of the case. The clock then has a square case with a glass door to the front and back as well and glass panels in the sides so that the movement can be viewed. The bottom of the case then has a further moulding and is finished by found lovely, thin feet.

The dial is then painted and set out in black roman numerals. The dial also has a smaller ring to the outside of the roman numerals to show the minutes. The dial is then signed to the centre “PURVIS North Audley St London” which can still be seen although it is faded. Finally the dial is finished by two lovely shaped fingers.

The movement is then chain fusee and has been completely cleaned and serviced. The clock ticks away as it should and comes complete with its pendulum, winding key, and travel nut. The movement is then also engraved to the back plate by the maker “Purvis LONDON”.

Alexander Purvis is recorded as working in North Audley Street, Grosvenor Square, London from circa 1820, and most probably for a decade or so before. He was still known to be there in 1845, although also recorded at Cheapside from before 1828 until 1844, so it is possible he moved there and returned to Grosvenor Square at this time. At some point after this year he went into partnership with Bishop with them recorded at Grosvenor Square from circa 1851 until 1881.

The clock measures approximately:

- 7.75” / 19.5cm Tall.

- 6.25” / 16cm Wide.

- 5” / 13cm Deep.
