Antique Single Chain Fusee Ebonised & Ormolu Mantel Clock by Payne & Co London

19th century
Description

Antique Single Chain Fusee Ebonised & Ormulu Mantel Clock Payne & Co London.

This stunning antique mantel clock has a black ebonised cased with a lovely “hour glass” shape. The front of the clock then has a wonderful pair of ormolu, gilt brass mounts, as well as four mounts to each corner at the top. The case is then finished by four beautifully shaped “maidens head” feet which set it off fantastically.

The dial is then painted and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside marking the minutes. The dial then appears to have been signed by Payne & Co to the top of the centre although unfortunately this is rubbed away and hard to see. The dial is then has a lovely patterned surround as well as a domed glass set into a brass bezel. Finally the dial is finished by two wonderfully shaped hands.

The movement is then accessed from the back and is a single chain fusee example of the upmost quality. It is ticking away as it should and comes complete with its regulating pendulum as well as its winding key. The movement is then engraved to the back by the maker “Payne & Co 163 New Bond St London” to show the clock was made by the reputable William Payne.

‘William Payne & Co 1811 - 1875

163 New Bond Street, London.

William Payne is first recorded in 1816 at 62 South Moulton Street London. By 1825 he has moved to 163 New Bond Street where the company remains until the 20th century.’

It measures approximately:

- 10.5” / 26.5cm Tall.

- 8” / 20.5cm Wide.

- 5” / 12.5cm Deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These clocks feature a wooden case stained black to imitate ebony, embellished with cast brass or bronze mounts known as ormolu. Typically produced in the nineteenth century, they combine Rococo design influences with precise mechanical horology.

The main body was constructed from dense timbers like fruitwood or oak, stained black to form the ebonised finish. Decorative elements were cast in bronze or brass and fire-gilded, paired with enamel or painted brass dials and steel movement components.

Inspect the internal movement for a cone-shaped pulley connected to the mainspring barrel via a tiny bicycle-style chain. Authentic period pieces also display cast ormolu mounts fixed with historic screws and hand-engraved maker details on the dial or backplate.

Position the piece as a central focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a library bookcase. The combination of black timber and gilded brass complements both traditional and minimalist contemporary decor schemes.

Dust the ebonised wood and gilt mounts regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes that strip gilding or wax. The mechanical movement should be serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years to ensure smooth operation.
