1920s Battle of Boyne Full Hunter Pocket Watch

1920s Battle of Boyne full hunter pocket watch.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has some short scratches where it has been opened in the past.

The watch measures 53mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop so slightly larger than a standard 50mm pocket watch. The case is gold plated and it is in lovely condition.

Unusually, the front of the watch has an image of William III commemorating the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The Battle was between the forces of the deposed King James II of England and Ireland, VII of Scotland, and those of King William III who, with his wife Queen Mary II, had acceded to the Crowns of England and Scotland in 1689.

The back of the watch has the initials LRG and the date of July 1922, this possibly relates to commemorative celebrations... “The Protestant Ascendancy celebrated their position as a ruling class by annual recollections of their victories over their hated popish enemies, especially at the Battle of the Boyne, which has been commemorated on July 12 with parades by the Orange Order from the 1790s until today” (taken from britannia.com)

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover. Inside, there is a glass lens which is in lovely condition.

The dial has blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. There is a vertical hairline to the left hand side of the dial but it is faint.

The watch comes in new presentation box.
